Choose the right pot for your orchid

Choose the right pot for your orchid

You see most orchid health problems are totally preventable. It's because you can easily set up your orchid in a pot the right way from the beginning. And if your orchid has been living in the "wrong" pot up until now, don't worry. It's better that you finding out now. So you can take action and use a suitable pot as soon as possible. The pot is your orchid's home- it's where it will be living 24hours per day for the rest of its life, so it's a good idea to choose a pot suitable to your orchid.

I recommend the following three basic types of pots to choose from.

Plastic pots:

Plastic pots are lightweight making them more suitable for indoors. They are not porous thereby the media dries out much slowly. For outdoor plastic pots, those ones manufactured to be ultra violet resisted would be best for this purpose. These pots keep their flexibility and have reduced brittleness when out in the sun. Also when using plastic pots outdoors, clear plastic pots are better than coloured or dark pots because these ones can actually act as heat collectors while in the sun causing the media to dry out. Plastic pots are generally suitable for orchid plants that do not like to dry out between watering.

Terracotta pots:

Terracotta pots are heavier and therefore more resisted in turning over in strong
wind. These pots are more suitable for outdoors. In clay pots the media quickly dries out because the clay is porous so it wicks out the water content of the media. The pots normally have one drainage hole situated in the bottom. Some designs

Basket orchid pot:

The basket orchid pot is suitable for orchids with sprawling plants or with pendant flowers. The basket design can be of wire, mesh, wood or plastic. The advantage of basket orchid pots allow air to circulate around the root system. The disadvantage is that the media tends to dry out quickly.

By following the above guidelines, you'll be taking the first step in choosing the right potfor your orchid.

Of course, there is a lot more to it, that and I couldn't possibly lay out the entire solutions in this post.
include additional drainage holes on the sides. The terracotta pot is suitable for orchids that like to dry out before the next watering.

Selecting the Best Orchids for Your Home

Selecting the Best Orchids for Your Home

Many orchid enthusiasts (at least in the beginning) just go out and buy orchids, without really knowing what they should be looking for in the plants. Orchids, like good wine, are very different from each other. A lot of factors affect orchids, like the region from where the plants came from, the maintenance techniques of the
supplier, grower, etc.

Here are our top tips for improving your chances of bringing home a real winner during your orchid shopping trip:

1.Check how firmly the roots have attached to the orchid media. Healthy orchids are firmly attached - damaged or weak orchids have poor anchorage. Also check the roots for any signs of rotting.

2.Inspect the roots next. You need to make sure that the roots are not rotting from fungal or bacterial infestation. Malformed roots may also mean that the orchid may be suffering from a viral condition. If there are some broken roots that is fine, as long as the majority of the root network is healthy and intact.

3.Check the leaves. The leaves should be beautifully formed and uniformly shaped. Malformed leaves may also mean that the orchid has caught a plant virus. In such cases, do not buy the orchid since most viral conditions of orchids are incurable. The leaves should also be green and not bluish or yellowish.

4.Inspect the pseudo bulbs of the orchid. Pseudo bulbs areactually newly formed buds that will later blossom flowers. The bulbs should be plump and healthy-looking, with a good
color. In our next lesson, I'll be talking about after purchasing your orchid how to keep it safe during the trip home. To read more information click here

Until then, enjoy your orchids!

Power of humidity

Power of humidity

One of the least known facts about orchids is that they really need lots of humidity in order to thrive.
For detailed text look here....

Save for a few cold-loving specimens that originally hail from places like the Arctic Circle or the Andes mountain range, the majority of the orchids that you will see being sold by local suppliers will require lots of humidity.

Humidity is important because it provides an instant source of moisture to the orchids. In addition to being an easy
supply of moisture, humidity also plays a crucial role in the thermal regulation of the plants.

When the temperature of the immediate environment of the
orchid rises, the humidity or air moisture content should
also follow suit.

Otherwise, you will run the risk of having a parched and nearly-dying orchid in a few weeks.

This principle applies especially to sun-loving specimens.Sun-loving specimens love dappled light, but they also need lots of humidity to survive. Here are some strategies to
improve the humidity of your orchids' environment:

1.If you have several orchids in your garden, you can
cluster them together to increase the humidity level around
the plants.

Clustering the plants will create a mini-climate around the
orchids.

2.Invest in equipment like foggers or humidifiers.

These machines are great for larger structures like greenhouses, where both aerial plants and terrestrial plants will benefit greatly from higher humidity.

3.Avoid placing your indoor orchids in places like the
living room or bathroom - because these places have low humidity levels, generally.

Oncidium Orchids

Three Easy Ways to Liven Up Your Oncidium Orchids.

1.Oncidium orchids can be taken care of indoors or outdoors.
As long as the temperature and humidity of your home or your garden is right, oncidium orchids will thrive.

2.This type of orchid prefers direct sunlight, in contrast with other orchids that easily succumb to the direct heat of the sun.

Don't forget that sun-loving orchids would fare better with dappled sunlight - so if you have some trees and a bit of shade, that would be perfect for oncidium orchids.

During the growth season, the more light and warmth these orchids receive, the better off they are. Watch for beautiful blooms during summer!

3.Like other sun-loving orchid specimens, Oncidiums love a lot of water. So schedule your watering more than twice a week to give your plants enough hydration, especially during the growth season.
